Ca-modified Al–Mg–Sc alloy with high strength at elevated temperatures due to a hierarchical microstructure

Al-Mg alloys are normally prone to lose part of their yield and tensile strength at high temperatures due insufficient thermal stability the microstructure. Here, we present a Ca-modified Al–Mg–Sc alloy demonstrating elevated temperatures. The microstructure contains Al4Ca phases distributed as network along grain boundary Al3(Sc,Zr) nano-particles dispersed within grains. evolution age-hardening analysis indicate that combination an Sc-rich leads excellent even upon aging 300 °C. for up 250 °C is significantly improved by treatment comparable with commercial heat-resistant aluminum alloys, i.e., A356 A319. At temperature °C, superior above-mentioned more so when expressed specific low density alloy. high-temperature results from synergistic effect solid solution strengthening, strengthening nanoparticle order strengthening.
